Inner Demons
In this poetic and intimate portrait, Rosaline Kanneh shares the cultural tug-of-war she faces as an African woman caught up in the narrow and unrealistic white, western ideals of body and size. While her healthy, curvy body was praised by her family growing up, she was taunted as the ‘big ugly girl’ through school, leading to a crumbling of her confidence and gnawing self-hatred. That self-hatred turned into an obsession with starving herself, taking her to the brink of death. Her mother and grandmother were bewildered and tormented by Rosaline’s ever-shrinking frame, unsure how to help their beautiful child battle these unfamiliar and overwhelming inner demons.
